三井越後屋の創業者「三井高利」は、伊勢松阪に生まれ、若くして江戸にある兄の店で働き、のち、松阪に戻って結婚したのち、金融業を営む。松阪で力を蓄え、52歳になった延宝元年(1673)、室町通蛸薬師に仕入店を開き、江戸・本町に三井越後屋呉服店を開業しました。 商売も発展し、起動に乗ってくると、蛸薬師の店を拡張しましたが、越後屋がいよいよ大繁盛し、借家では手狭となり、宝永元年(1704)、室町通二条の場所、冷泉(れいせん)町に家屋敷を購入して移転しました。 その後、昭和58年(1983)に閉店するまで存続し続けました。現在は三井不動産が記念庭園を築き、三井京都創業の地として保存伝承しています。 この地は三越京都支店として存続していたときは広さ950坪にも及びました。同支店の閉店後、三井不動産が一部の68坪を譲り受けて「三井越後屋京本店(ほんだな)記念庭園」(非公開)としました。北側のマンションも元は同じ敷地です。 Mitsui Takatoshi, the founder of Mitsui Echigoya, was born in Ise Matsusaka, worked at his brother's shop in Edo at a young age, and after returning to Matsusaka to get married, he started the financial business.
